Personal Takeaway
This project gave me a much stronger understanding of how mechanical design decisions affect an entire automated system, from part geometry and clearances to loading, manufacturability, assembly, and maintenance. Over the course of the project, I learned Autodesk Inventor from the ground up and became proficient in using it for part, assembly, and fabrication-focused design. I also gained hands-on experience with reliable industrial mechanisms, pneumatic systems, actuator sizing, and load calculations, while learning how to evaluate how each component transfers forces and interacts with the rest of the conveyor. Most importantly, the project taught me to apply the KISS principle by prioritizing simple, robust solutions that are easier to manufacture, assemble, troubleshoot, and maintain. Through multiple design iterations, I became more comfortable combining CAD, engineering calculations, and design reviews to turn an initial concept into a practical manufacturing solution.
