Personal Takeaways
This project pushed me to grow significantly in CAD and practical machine design. One of the biggest learning curves was AutoCAD. I had very little experience with it at the start, so becoming comfortable with detailed fabrication drawings, layouts, and drafting standards took time, but it ended up being one of the most valuable skills I developed during the project.
I also became much more confident working with Inventor assemblies, drive constraints, and motion relationships, which helped me better understand how parts interact throughout a mechanism rather than viewing each component in isolation. On the mechanical side, I gained exposure to different actuation methods, including pneumatic cylinders and air bellows, and learned how actuator choice depends on force requirements, motion, packaging space, and reliability.
Overall, the project helped me become more comfortable taking an unfamiliar mechanical system, breaking it down, learning the tools needed to work with it, and turning design requirements into a practical and manufacturable solution.
