Problem: The Asus Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop overheats easily, especially when set flat on a table. Typical laptop stands work, however, cooling pads are known to be more effective at lowering the internal temperatures of a laptop while in use.
Problem: The Asus Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop overheats easily, especially when set flat on a table. Typical laptop stands work, however, cooling pads are known to be more effective at lowering the internal temperatures of a laptop while in use.
Solution: Designed and fabricated an automated laptop cooling stand using SOLIDWORKS and 3D printing, integrating an Arduino Nano, DS18B20 temperature sensor, MOSFET, and cooling fan. Programmed temperature-based fan control with hysteresis to automatically activate cooling.

Result: Through iterative testing and design changes, the system reduced laptop cooldown time by approximately 35% compared with passive cooling.

The frame was designed and iterated in SOLIDWORKS, ensuring the laptop is raised with space for airflow underneath. The geometry was kept lightweight and compact while providing adequate support, then prepared for FDM 3D printing in Bambu Studio.
The electronic control system was prototyped on a breadboard before being transferred to a perfboard for a more compact and durable layout.

The system was programmed to monitor temperature in real time and automatically control the fan using a hysteresis-based response. When the temperature sensor read 29.5°C or above, the fan automatically turned on, remaining on until the reading reached below 28°C.

The Arduino code sampled the DS18B20 temperature sensor at regular intervals and used conditional logic to switch the MOSFET-controlled fan on and off. The hysteresis gap between the activation and shutoff temperatures prevented rapid fan cycling when the temperature fluctuated near the threshold.
